The Poppy War

The Poppy War, the debut novel from R.F. Kuang and the first installment of the Poppy War trilogy, is an exciting fantasy epic with a strong introspection on the justification of the use of power.

The plot is loosely based on Chinese historical events from the late 1800s through to the mid-1900s, with fantasy elements woven into the story. The main character, Fang Runin (usually referred to as Rin), is an orphaned peasant who, against all odds, wills her way into her country’s most elite military academy, only to discover she can summon devastating, drug-fueled power from the gods. When war breaks out with a rival nation, the story pivots hard from coming-of-age fantasy to brutal war narrative, and Rin’s journey becomes as much about what she’s willing to become as what she’s fighting for.

World-Building and Plot

The descriptiveness of the locations and action is excellent. Kuang gives the reader a clear view of the world the story takes place in throughout. The plotting of the book is also a major strength. Pulling elements from real-world events gives the story weight and context.

Rin’s Descent

The greatest strength of the book is Rin’s journey. Her conflicted nature and the dark path she ultimately chooses are influenced by the actions of others, but the story always remains focused on her personal choices. This, combined with the strong, vivid, immersive descriptions, creates a chilling descent into darkness.

A Note on the Dialogue

One negative: the dialogue is somewhat generic. It feels like there are two types of characters, teen/young adult and older authority figure. The dialogue for characters within those types at times feels uniform.

The Question at the Center

The Poppy War envisions how people can be driven to dark, destructive decisions by the events around them. The question of whether Rin should use her power to affect the conflict is at the forefront of the story. Allowing things to happen versus using her power to change things is the core conflict she struggles with. Are the repercussions of her actions worth it? The focus always remains on the choices she makes.
